I am not sure why Brette Ehrenpreis doesn't have a contract for L'Oreal's next mascara launch (her eyes and lashes are Cara Delevingne perfection), but their loss is our gain because she revealed her favorite mascaras, her skincare regimen, plus where she finds the newest K-Beauty products. That's what good friends do for one another....
Before we begin, I'll give you a rundown of her details. Brette is 30 years old, lives in New York (Upper East Side), recently earned her MBA and is an Associate Brand Manager for Irish Spring focusing on innovation. What does that mean? "I develop new body wash for the 'Millennial man!'" Rawrrrrrr....
Seriously, before you begin reading...fix yourself a snack, brew a cup of tea, change into comfy PJs because Brette doesn't hold much back. True to form, she does nothing halfway. Her routine is intense - she name dropped so many products I've never used. And, if you take only one thing away from her recommendations (which would be a shame - she has tried every thing), please wear (and reapply) your sunscreen every. damn. day.
WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY STYLE IN A SENTENCE OR A FEW WORDS?
"Something Blue. It’s recently come to my attention that I like blue products: Laino Lip Balm, Innoxa Gouttes Blueues French Blue Eye Drops, Herbivore Blue Tansy Mask (I rarelyyyy finish a whole product, especially a mask and I could not get enough of this one), klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream (great for calming down red, stressed skin and thick enough for nighttime use with a healthy application, but can be applied thin enough for daytime use under makeup) is a nice, smooth cream but cools like a gel. And, of course, Lipstick Queen Hello Sailor Lipstick."
WHAT MASCARA ARE YOU WEARING THESE DAYS?
"I wear mascara like day-of-the-week underwear - there's a new one for each day or occasion. I usually keep three to four brand in steady rotation - variety is the spice of life! But, right now... I am using Rimmel Scandaleyes Extreme, Avene Couvrance High Tolerance Mascara (purchased in Paris and not available in the US), Kiko Luxurious Lashes Maxi Brush Mascara, and Kiko Fall 2.0 Limited Edition Mascara - I love the 2.0 it’s a tiny little brush so you have a ton of control even though it takes a little longer to apply). I'm also sampling two new brands for good measure: Ciate London Wonderwand Intensely Volumising Mascara and Estee Lauder Sumptuous Bold Volume Lifting Mascara. I love visiting drug stores, beauty stores and department stores when I travel, seeing new brands and products, learning about local favorites and, of course, collecting some wearable souvenirs."
WE SHARE A LOVE OF FACE MASKS AND BOTH "MASK" AT LEAST FOUR DAYS A WEEK. TELL ME THE BEST, MOST GLAMOROUS SHEET MASK EVER!
"Dermovia Lace Your Face Masks! Simply divine. They're soaked in enough essence for two, maybe three uses and are made of this wonderfully stretchy, perfectly thick material. The mask hooks onto your ears from both face and chin and creates just the right amount of pressure. I could wear this mask for an hour it’s so comfortable. I like the Healing Yogurt, Hydrating, and Calming ones. They’re a total splurge at $15 but I use them at least twice and there's still a ton of serum left. They also run specials all the time so sign up for alerts." (Editor's Note: Sign up for Revolve emails for 10% off your first purchase, if you don't want to wait for a sale)
WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY STYLE IN A FEW WORDS (OR SENTENCES....)?
"The one consistent thing for me is it's all about the eyes. I try to keep my brows groomed and mascara on point as much as possible. Other than that I'll go from no makeup one day to a bright pink or super dark lip the next. I love looking natural and dewy and have been wearing less makeup lately. It's a dichotomy though; I love playing with different colors and textures, creating a super smokey eye using whatever shades/tools are on hand - give me one eyeliner and I can give you a new look for each day of the week."
DID ANYONE INFLUENCE YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE OR OVERALL STYLE?
"My mom! We do our makeup together all the time! When I was young I would watch her get ready in the morning and loved playing with all her products. She taught me how to put eyeliner on my waterline when I was like 12 years old. Now our roles have shifted. She'll try anything but isn't always up-to-date on the newest thing. She's always asking for advice, which product to use for what. I love digging through her drawers and playing with different colors. We also both hoard samples and trade them."
YOU TURNED 30 THIS YEAR WHICH IS THE OFFICIAL YEAR WOMEN BEGIN TO USE THE TERM ANTI-AGING AT LEAST ONCE A DAY. THOUGHTS ON GROWING OLDER (AND WISER)?
"For me it's all about prevention and maintenance. I've been using eye cream for over a decade, I always wear sunscreen, and get a facial every two months to ensure my skin is clean (so it can absorb all those products I spend all my money on)."
I AM LOBBING ONE UP FOR YOU...KOREAN SKINCARE - THOUGHTS?
"I'm a fan and have been using Korean products (mostly from SokoGlam) for years. My favorite brands are Klairs (Midnight Blue Calming Cream), Hanskin (Hyaluron Skin Essence), and Neogen (Real Fresh Green Tea Cleansing Stick and Bio-Peel Gauze Peeling Wine); but, lately I've wanted to streamline. I learned a lot of skincare techniques from Sokoglam. Depending on how I'm feeling I apply one to three layers of essence right after Biologique Recherche Lotion P50, pouring a few drops into my palm and then pressing it into my skin. I let each layer dry for about 30 seconds and then repeat. General skincare application: I like to multitask so I'll apply my toner, turn on my Nespresso, apply a layer of essence, put on deodorant, another layer of essence, put on some clothes, put on moisturizer, brush my hair, apply suncreen, select my jewelry. I try really hard not to touch my phone while I'm doing my face - I wipe down my phone alllll the time with these lens & screen cleaning wipes from Care Touch - I keep them by my bed, at my desk, in my bag."
WHAT ARE THE DRUGSTORE PRODUCTS YOU SWEAR BY?
"Colgate Toothpaste and Irish Spring." (EDITOR'S NOTE: That was Brette's shameless plug but I was raised in a Crest house and I've made my apartment a Colgate-filled lair because it's just better stuff. And, don't get me started on my love for Irish Spring. That is a separate post.)
YOU ARE A PRODUCT...MAXIMALIST. WHAT IF YOU'RE ON A TWO-WEEK VACATION AND YOU CAN ONLY PACK SIX PRODUCTS?
"This would NEVER happen in my real life - though I can pack in a carry-on for a 10+ day multi-city European trip."
- Face Wash (the Neogen Cleansing Stick is perfect for travel, not a liquid (!) and I can use it for a double cleanse without drying out my skin)
- Moisturizer (w/ SPF - usually these are separate steps for me)
- Mascara (I use samples when I travel so I can try new things and smaller packaging)
- Tinted Lip Balm (doubles as a blush - don't want to look pasty in pictures)
- Concealer (I'll use around my nose, on my chin, in between my eyebrows etc. to counteract any redness - not going for a full coverage face)
- Multipurpose Oil (I use it on my hair, cuticles, and any dry patch that pops up on my face)
IS THERE A PRODUCT YOU DON'T LOVE?
"I’m going to be brutally honest - this pains me. I have a love-hate relationship with nail polish. I love the way it looks, obviously, but I cannot keep the stuff on my nails. I use the Essie Gel Couture line and I get maybe four good days before my nails start chipping. And yes, I know I could add a top coat mid-week but I don’t want to. By day seven, I’m a mess. Gel manicures make my nails so thin, I just can’t do it. Help me. I use Sally Hansen Cuticle Rehab."
WHAT'S THE STRANGEST THING YOU'VE DONE IN THE NAME OF BEAUTY?
"For a masquerade party I created a mask on my face using feathers; glued to my skin with spirit gum (special remover was required). There were feather lashes, too. I had a fun night rocking those feathers!"
I'M SURE YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE FRAGRANCE....
"Yes...I was browsing around Min New York (!) years ago and fell in love with Black Jade by Lubin Paris. The bottle is gorgeous, so the simple act of putting it on feels super luxurious. I've also been hoarding samples of Byredo's new-ish Velvet Haze." (Editor's Note: Brette asked for a side bar here. She urges you to go to Min New York: 'It's a great place to play and discover your fragrance preferences.' She also wants you to know this is the most expensive perfume she's ever purchased.)
YOU'VE LEFT US WITH A LOT TO THINK ABOUT, MY FRIEND. LAST QUESTION - DO YOU HAVE A BEAUTY SECRET YOU CAN SHARE?
"Put your dry shampoo in your hair at night - really work it into your roots, massaging with your fingers. It absorbs oil as it builds overnight and you'll wake up with fresh looking hair. If you need to add a bit more in the morning (or at any time), apply lightly, work it in, and then blast with the cool setting on your blow dryer to get rid of any 'debris.' This helps me avoid a mid-day head scratch that results in powder under my nails."
OKAY - WE CANNOT END ON DIRTY HAIR. LAST QUESTION - I PROMISE! IF YOU COULD NAME A LIPSTICK, WHAT WOULD YOU CALL IT?
"A purple-violet called Phoebe for my gorgeous and sassy poodle. She passed away a few years ago but I’m dying to get a silver mini poodle in her honor."
